What is CACFP?
CACFP is the Child & Adult Care Food Program, a Federal program that provides healthy meals and snacks to children and adults receiving day care. It plays a vital role in improving the quality of day care, while making it more affordable for many low-income families. The Child & Adult Care Food Program reimburses participating day care homes and childcare centers a federally reimbursiable rate. It is administered at the Federal level by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and at the state level by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE). Quality Care Services, Inc. has administered the CACFP at the local level through an agreement with KSDE since 1988, as one of eighteen sponsoring organizations in Kansas.
Why is CACFP Important?
Each day, 2.6 million children receive nutritious meals and snacks through provider participation in the Child & Adult Care Food Program. The program also provides meals and snacks to 74,000 adults who receive care in nonresidential adult day care centers. CACFP reaches even further to provide meals to children residing in homeless shelters, and snacks and suppers to youths participating in eligible after-school care programs.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any KDHE licensed childcare facility or home childcare provider.
How do I get started with the CACFP?
After applying for a license through your county health department, simply call the Quality Care Services, Inc. office at 1-316-321-7237. Upon receipt of your license, you are eligible to sign the CACFP agreement for participation. Once you receive your license, we will schedule a time to come to your site, train you on the meal pattern requirements, explain our record-keeping system, review program regulations, and sign the CACFP provider agreement.
